Solid Surface Countertops: An Overview

by | Aug 2, 2019 | Bathroom Countertops, Kitchen Countertops, Solid Surface Countertops

Not everyone wants to commit to the maintenance that a natural stone countertop requires. However, most people will agree that a genuine stone countertop is beautiful. Fortunately, there’s a way to get the best of both worlds! A solid surface countertop can mimic natural stone nearly perfectly, without the high maintenance requirements.

Solid surface materials give you the same eye-catching design as genuine stone without the high price tag or maintenance commitments. Are solid surface counters the right choice for your renovation project? See if any of these advantages appeal to you.

Appearances

Most solid surface countertops look very similar to natural stone, with many of the same flecks and patterns as granite or marble. Each style can be customized into more than 40 colors by adding marble dust or other pigments, creating the perfect color scheme for your kitchen. Choose from four equally stunning types of solid surfaces:

Cleaning and Maintenance

A solid surface countertop is completely non-porous and never requires sealing, meaning that once it’s installed, you’re done! You only need to worry about periodically cleaning your new countertop with a mixture of equal parts mild bleach or soap and water when necessary to remove residue. Don’t worry about stains, however–the completely nonporous nature of solid surfaces means that stains will almost never happen! The durable materials also resist chips or cracks, but if one does occur, your countertop contractor can repair them quickly.

Practical Applications

Because of their non-porous nature, solid surfaces are perfect for any environment where they will be exposed to water. You’ll never see mold or water damage appearing. Many homeowners use these well-sealed countertops in the bathroom for a beautiful appearance without the concern of water damage, while others add them in the kitchen as well. The style and durability are compatible with either home environment!

Pro Tip: Solid surface countertops are resistant to heat, meaning you could theoretically place a hot pan on them without damaging the countertop. However, this might damage the finish, so a hot pad is still a good idea.

Choosing the Perfect Countertop Materials

Solid surface countertops provide a near-perfect balance of functionality, appearances, and maintenance requirements. If you love the look of natural stone but don’t like the care and resealing it requires, a solid surface countertop could be the solution.
